Manchester museum workers fight for a Living Wage

Manchester Socialist Alternative members today attended a lively picket at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester, organised by Prospect Union, with around 20 workers fighting for a living wage for staff in the Science Museum Group.

Employees have been offered a derisory 1.5% pay increase well below inflation after enduring a 13% reduction in pay in real terms in the past four years alone. Meanwhile, the Director enjoys a salary of £150,000, with an increase of 5% every year for the past five years, and a bonus of between £20,000 and £25,000!

Attempts to negotiate have been rejected by the Science Museum Group due to "financial constraints", but considering that the group made a surplus of around £4.4million in 2018-2019 including a tax credit of £1.3 million this is clearly nonsense.

Hundreds of leaflets were handed out to staff and members of the public, workers were confident and will escalate action if their employers continue to ignore them. Socialist Alternative members will continue to support the striking workers all the way until they win!
